Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the University of the Philippines Mathematics Club (UPMC) celebrated its centennial year following the theme of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, “Through the Looking-Glass.”

The sudden shift from an on ground to an online celebration was the main challenge that the organization encountered according to UPMC president Christine Tongol. The transition required them to change some of their annual events like the sportsfest turned zoom zumba sessions.

Its committee structure also changed from three to six committees to cater different roles in the organization. From the Board of Directors, it also shifted to the current Executive Committee. Furthermore, there were also significant changes in the members’ bonding activities; from card games to mobile and online games.

For 100 years, Tongol stated that the organization’s greatest accomplishment is that it was able to uphold its mission of promoting mathematics and its various fields.

“I also think that being able to withstand 100 years as an organization is a great accomplishment of UPMC. This will not be possible without the help of alumni and members,” Tongol said.

In celebrating its year of service, UPMC has organized outreach events, recognized respected alumni, facilitated committee wars, administered Zumba sessions, and engaged in an anniversary dinner in a virtual setting.

UPMC will also be conducting webinars which aims to promote mathematics in its various fields and to also help educate the students and professionals on the subject’s importance in intellectual development and social growth in the middle of a pandemic. The series of webinars entitled “Down The Rabbit Hole: Into the World of Mathematics” would run on February 22–27, 2021.

Listed below are the dates and topics of the webinar series. More information can be found here.

UPMC aims to address the topic of partnering with math organizations outside of UP Diliman. Tongol added, “We will see if there is an opportunity where we can be partners with them in one of our events this semester. It will be a great opportunity to promote mathematics and our events.”
