How I keep my health in check in this fast and busy life

…and you can and should too

Okay let’s face it, we have all been at some point or some of you maybe right now, where we tend to compromise our health to keep up with our busy life. And its more natural to fall into this when we suddenly become busy focusing on our jobs or projects or anything, and life kind of starts playing at 2x speed.

Confessions first

If you are thinking of me as some perfectly disciplined guy, well I’m sorry to say that I’m not. I’m just like you, I have had my ups and downs and I have been in a stage where I have completely ignored my health and that hit me hard — real hard.

It all happened when I joined my first job. Things suddenly changed so much for me, that I just couldn’t keep up with everything, and naturally I dropped off my habit of working out regularly because I couldn’t make time for it every day — or at least I thought so.

This continued when I switched jobs and joined a startup. Nevertheless I had more reasons or rather excuses to skip my workouts everyday as I became busier than ever. However, this is where things started getting worse.

The more idle moments I spent with my butt glued to the chair and typing on the computer, the more I started feeling sick. My body started feeling more and more lethargic and ached more often.

At the age of just 22 I started feeling like I was 50, all thanks to my newly found sedentary lifestyle

I knew I had to do something about this as if I let this continue I would be writing an article about how I screwed up my body from a hospital bed — oh yeah, I hate hospitals and don’t plan on making it my living room someday.

Changing tracks

After about 6 months of torturing my body with junk food and negligible movements I finally joined a nearest gym to get in shape. Its been over 8–9 months now that I haven’t gone back to that lazy me, though there has been some time where I almost got trapped into that quicksand of laziness but I made my way out and got myself back on track.

Now, you don’t necessarily have to join a gym to get your health in check, but its a great option. You see I am the kind of guy who loves lifting weights more than getting a morning run, but if that’s not your goal then you can always prefer running, or do yoga, or do freehand workouts or basically anything that gets your body moving.

The Promise of 3Ns

Before jumping into anything, you need to make an honest promise to yourself that you will honour these three core objectives without fail,

  • No excuses
  • No junk food
  • No giving up

Its only when you get out of making excuses as to why you can’t workout today or the day after, you start making real change. Also, while I don’t follow a very very strict non-junk food diet, I try to keep my junk food intake to a very minimum, only when I really really want to have that fried chicken or anything like that.

You should be enjoying and trying out everything you want in your life, but just for the sake of your body, keep those junk foods intake to a minimum.

Get the blood flowing

Now its time to the actual work and get your blood flowing. No matter how busy you are you can always make time for some quick workout. Let’s divide ourselves into two groups based on how busy we are,

  • Super Busy — If you fall into this group then you can keep your body refreshed by following intense but short workouts routines like the popular 7 Minute Workout or go for a morning jog or do some yoga. You will be surprised how 10–15 mins each day can significantly make you fitter and healthier.
  • Busy — If you are like me and can squeeze out 45–50 mins from your day then hit the gym, lift some weights, do some cardio and get into shape. I usually hit the gym in the morning and then start the day. This approach helps me make sure that I don’t have excuses like leaving office late, or have to catch up with some friend and blah blah blah.

You can’t live a healthy life just by working out, you need to follow a proper diet too. Cut sugars and saturated fats and aim for a protein and carbohydrates rich diet to get yourself lean, energetic and fit.

To a healthy you

While running after dreams and money, we often forget about our health and believe me this isn’t something that’s going to pay you well in the long term.

Ask yourself this one question, what will you be doing with all that money if you spend the rest of your life chained to a bed, unable to enjoy the beautiful things in life.

It doesn’t take a huge chunk of your time everyday to workout, all you need is to plan your day properly and make working out a habit.

Your body gives you all the strength and energy to achieve the things you want in life, its time that you give back something to it
