The preventive approach to HIV is called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This less known concept of using HIV drugs and off-label drugs which have had success treating AIDS and HIV to prevent infection with this virus.
The professional doctors guiding the research trials and co-funding the project are the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the NICHD Maternal and Pediatric Infectious Disease Branch (MPIDB), and the National Institute of Mental Health.

The Clinical Phase 2B Safety and Effectiveness Study researched Tenofovir 1% Gel, Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Tablet and Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Tablet for the Prevention of HIV Infection in Women. The Phase 3B Open-Label Follow-on Trial to Assess, the Continued Safety of and Adherence to a Vaginal Ring Containing Dapivirine in Women, is another preventative gel to consider.

Formulations currently being tested for prevention include vaginal gels and oral tablets.HIV Prevention Trials of Existing Antiretroviral Therapies. Emphasis has been on the evaluation of antiretroviral (ARV)-based prevention strategies, examining whether some of the same ARVs commonly used to treat HIV are used for prevention.

A significant off-label drug for HIV is Gleevec. It is a cancer medication. It is recently excluded from two prescription drug management firms used by insurance companies due to the high monthly cost. There are several other cancer drugs approved outside of America which may be useful treating and reversing HIV.

Off-label antiviral drugs used previously for HIV and AIDS found on healthline.com include Nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). These very potent drugs interrupt the life cycle of HIV during replication. These drugs also have other actions that prevent HIV from replicating in your body.

NRTI drugs include:
abacavir (Ziagen)
efavirenz/emtriacitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Atripla)
lamivudine/zidovudine (Combivir)
emtriacitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Complera)
emtricitabine (Emtriva)
lamivudine (Epivir)
abacavir/lamivudine (Epzicom)
zidovudine (Retrovir)
abacavir/lamivudine/zidovudine (Trizivir)
emtricitabine/tenofovire disoproxil fumarate (Truvada)
didanosine (Videx)
didanosine extended release (Videx EC)
tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread)
stavudine (Zerit)

Medical drugs used to prevent or destroy AIDS in the future may include antifungals, interferon, and fetal umbilical cord stem cells. CRISPR is another technique which can correct damaged DNA and restore health to HIV and AIDS infected human or animal cells.
