A paralysed patient took his first steps in five years

When 29-year-old Jered Chinnock was paralysed from the waist down in a snowmobile accident, he thought he’d never walk again — but here he is taking his first steps in five years.

It was made possible by pioneering surgery in which an electrode was implanted in his back to stimulate the surviving nerves in his spinal cord. The device is then controlled by the patient’s mind.

Despite not having feeling in his legs, with assistance Jered was able to walk over 100m in one session.

So far he’s the first person to have the implant, but he said even if he can walk to the fridge by himself in the future, it will be worth it.

This hero firefighter left his own wedding to tackle a blaze

Firefighter Jeremy Bourasa showed his dedication to the job — when he left his own wedding to help put out a house fire.

He tied the knot with bride Krista at the fire station where he works, and initially stayed behind when a call came in.

But when an alert for more firefighters to help was put out, the groom leapt into action.

People are leaving hot water bottles out for the homeless this winter

A homelessness project is asking the public to donate hot water bottles to help rough sleepers keep warm this winter.

The Hot Water Bottle Network, which currently operates in five UK cities, will hang the bottles from trees or tie them to railings.

Notes with details of local businesses willing to fill the bottles with hot water will be attached to them. Maybe you can help!

Gran with dementia writes grandchildren notes before she forgets them

A grandma has left each of her six grandchildren a gift and a letter for when they turn 21 — before dementia stops her remembering who they are.

Olive Munro was diagnosed with the condition three years ago, but is determined not to let it stop her living life, or helping others.

The 67-year-old recently walked the famous Camino de Santiago route through France and northern Spain to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, and has more charity walks planned in the future. Help her reach her £10,000 target here.

Stolen cat Mr Muk was reunited with his owner

A ginger cat stolen two months ago from outside his home has been found and reunited with his owner.
