Not quiet on the Brexit front

Whilst the more sentimental MPs were putting on a show of emotion at the (temporary) muting of Big Ben for repairs, the government this week has been busy putting out its next round of Brexit position papers in an attempt to clarify what it wants from the upcoming negotiations.

The European Court of Justice

The biggest upset came from the government’s paper on the European Court of Justice. The court, which interprets and enforces the rules of the single market (and pretty much everything else that the EU does) has been one of those EU bogey-men institutions that the Brexiteers have been railing against for years. The prime minister has insisted that the UK would “take back control of our laws” on leaving the EU.

But on closer reading, the paper did NOT rule out the ECJ keeping its jurisdiction during the Brexit transition period that is planned after March 2019. Cue cries of “U-turn!”. Overall, the issue has been seen as a climbdown for Theresa May.

Migration

Immigration from the EU member nationals into the UK has been one of the biggest contentious topics which was fanned by the flames of Nigel Farage’s infamous ‘Breaking Point’ poster in the run-up to the referendum last year. Turns out talk of Brexit is already having the desired effect with an almost 25% drop in UK net migration since the vote.

Good news for Brexiteers, but bad news for the food industry.

How low can the pound go?

Off on your holidays to leave all this behind? Don’t leave it to the last minute to exchange your euros at the airport. You won’t get much for your money.
