Our round-up of the week’s best features

After a week of storms, Brexit and the Croydon Cat Killer we thought it was about time we all slowed down.

Smart, weird and just plain interesting, here are our favourite longer reads from this week.

The one about the couple who bit off more than they could chew…

Have you ever dreamed of buying a zoo? Nope, me neither. When a psychotherapist and a painter took on a fixer-upper with a difference, their dream pretty quickly turned into a nightmare.

“We could see there was a lot of work to do, but we had taken on rundown properties before,” Dean says, more than a year after moving to Wales. “We were prepared for all of that. We just weren’t prepared for the lynx escape.”

The one with all the spoilers

On Sunday night, millions of viewers are expected to tune in to watch the finale of the biggest UK drama this year. And they’ll do it all at the same time.

Viewers are now more used to being able to pick and choose when they watch their favourite shows (normally at 2am when you’ve got to be up in the morning) which has given rise to a whole new phenomenon: the spoiler.

ps. this does actually have spoilers in it — if you’re not up to speed on Bodyguard, you have been warned.

Here’s the tough nut to crack: where lies the responsibility with avoiding spoilers? With those who have seen the thing in question, and must keep schtum, or with those who have not yet had a chance to consume, and should therefore do all they can to avoid online discussion?

The one that is actually just about cauliflower

I wouldn’t ask you to read a story about just anything. Oh wait sorry, yes I would: here’s a deep dive into cauliflower.

How has our health and fitness obsessed world turned vehicle for cheese (and a curry if you’re lucky) into the ‘it food’ of the moment?

“If cauliflower can somehow become pizza…you, my friend, can do anything.”

And the one about Elon Musk

Elon Musk is all set to send a person to the moon by 2022. But he’s also the guy who’s facing legal action for calling a hero cave rescuer a “pedo”, who played fast and loose with the share value of his company by tweeting that he had “funding secured” when he actually didn’t, and who smoked weed in a podcast interview.

Love him or hate him, Musk is turning out to be one of the most fascinating characters of 2018.
