It’s not everyday that someone gets the opportunity to join what might one day go down as the best performing VC fund of all time. But that’s exactly what happened to former CAA agent and bizdev extraordinaire Matt Mazzeo, who joined Chris Sacca’s Lowercase Capital, early investor in Uber, Instagram, Docker, and Twitter. Mazzeo’s path to becoming one of the most sought after investors in LA was a non-traditional one, but in many ways his unique background is his greatest asset as it has given him the empathy and unique perspective to help founders build truly differentiated products.

Mark Suster and Matt Mazzeo

In case you missed earlier this week, Mazzeo sat down with Upfront’s Mark Suster for a wide-ranging chat that included discussions of streaming video (e.g Periscope, Meerkat, and MobCrush), the role of mentors in shaping our careers, the state of diversity in technology and venture capital, and what VCs can learn from the service mentality that shapes the agency world. He even tells the story of how he nearly got fired on his first day at CAA — and probably should have, were it not for a good natured and surprisingly understanding boss.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an investor, or aspiring to join either rank, there’s a lot to learn from Matt’s success. Listen to the full conversation, download the Podcast on iTunes, or subscribe to Bothsides TV via RSS here.
