Announcing 3Box and Ethereum Profiles

3Box by uPort • Developer Update #1 (Prototype Inside!)

Members of the uPort team have been developing a new decentralized data storage solution called 3Box, which allows Ethereum users to upload and share their information across dapps using any wallet.

We’re excited to unveil the first prototype of 3Box and Ethereum Profiles below.

What is 3Box?

3Box is an open source data storage solution for web3 that allows end users to manage their public and private information on the decentralized web. Data is stored on IPFS and managed via OrbitDB.

After exploring potential use cases for 3box, dapp developers told us they wanted shareable Ethereum Profiles first, as they would make the dapp onboarding process smoother and richer.

What are Ethereum Profiles?

Profiles are easily shareable user profiles for Ethereum addresses that consist of public and private information, and public activity feeds. Public Profiles are searchable and viewable by anyone, while access to Private Profiles must be initially requested from the user by the dapp via an ERC 712 signature through the web3 API.

Because Profiles contain all public and private information about a user, they make it easy for developers to get information about an Ethereum address. Developers can then query this information and use it however they like in their dapp. This powerful capability allows developers to onboard new users more easily.

Vision

We believe deeply in the need for a robust decentralized data storage and user-managed access control system that allows us as a web3 community to deliver on our collective promises for interoperability, a seamless web3 user experience, and self-sovereignty. We’ll build towards this vision with incremental releases that are usable by dapp developers and users today. We will deliver frequent and clear communication with the community about our releases. Right now, constant community feedback and early partnerships are our top priorities.
