The Ethereum Denver Hackathon, organized by the Colorado Blockchain Shepherds, was a massive success.

An attendee could hack on a project (with 100’s of other hackers), connect with established crypto-community folks and most importantly… forge new relationships — strengthening our Ethereum Ecosystem even more.

uPort will also be carefully monitoring the upsurge of recent
Beeth Bufficorn” migrations across the United States (and perhaps the world). Using our *super secret network* of self-sovereign uPort Citizens, we will do our best to update the network with the latest sightings.

Kevin Owocki (Gitcoin) where is your Beeth Bufficorn shirt!?

It can’t be overstated just how important it is to have passionate and focused individuals within the Ethereum Ecosystem — just like the ones within the emerging Colorado Blockchain Space.

A number of uPort team members (Rouven, Zach, Michael, Jonny and Kames) had the pleasure to meet, engage, and learn from the people who are Colorado Blockchain.

Yes, uPort will absolutely attend next year— thanks for the invite John!

But first (let’s not get too ahead of ourselves now), let’s celebrate this year’s winners of the EthDevner Hackathon! uPort is happy to announce that six teams utilized various aspects of the uPort platform within their hackathon projects.

Below is an overview of the projects, with a special shoutout to the hackathon winners, the FeelGood team.

FeelGood — Blood Donation System

https://github.com/TeamPhoenix-Ethdenver/FeelGood

FeelGood is a blockchain-based blood donation system that offers an unique way to trace blood and add accountability to the ecosystem. They accomplish this important goal by:

  • Enabling digital signing of donated blood bottles by an authorized donation center
  • Tracing and signing a pint of blood by the testing center
  • Empowering the health center (and therefore, the consumer of the blood) to track the history of blood and utilize it.

Focused on Saving Lives

Every 2 seconds, someone in the US needs blood.

Even though, we DONATE blood, the industry in itself holds a market of a massive $ 4.5 billion USD annually in the US. [Forbes]

Unfortunately, there have been cases of innocuous and malicious blood donation, which has led to diseases like HIV AIDS and Syphilis being spread to patients accepting blood from donors.

Parth Gargava and Zhongjie He (the FeelGood team) deserve a huge shoutout for their inspiring work tackling this incredibly important issue.

Parth Gargava is a graduate student at Northeastern University specializing in blockchain tech. He finished his co-op as an Artificial Intelligence developer at Fidelity Investments in Dec’17. He has a keen interest in smart contracts development and can’t wait for Casper to roll out! In his free time, he loves watching dragon ball Z and family guy!

Zhongjie (Eric) He, a master’s student at Northeastern University specializing in Information systems. I graduated and worked as a web developer in Hangzhou, China from 2014. I recently dove into the world of Ethereum and smart contracts. Several weeks ago, I came across uPort and immediately decided to use it in this hackathon.

Thanks for amazing work Parth and Zhongjie (Eric)!

Below are the rest of the hackathon projects that incorporated various aspects of the uPort platform. Check out their exciting work to get a glimpse of the vast potential of the Ethereum network when projects leverage the power of the uPort decentralized identity platform.

Campaign Finance Reform

Blockchain technology has the potential of reform campaign financing by increasing its transparency.

One of biggest issues Ethereum could solve is 501(c)(4) organizations.

These organizations collect money to promote social welfare. Through the IRS classification, the advisory groups only need to report those who donate money for political purposes, but they do not need to release donor information if the donation is unrelated to their cause.

The lack of transparency with these organizations could easily be manipulating their numbers to keep certain donors in the dark. By keeping these donations on the blockchain, these organizations may be ordered to reveal their private donors.

RefugeeID

https://github.com/zerostatic/ethDenver-refugee-identity

Today, various refugee agencies have their own platforms and processes for tracking refugees and other displaced individuals, with little-to-no coordination between these distinct platforms. The problem only gets worse for individuals moving between countries. At the individual level, the refugees themselves have no control or ability to access their data.

RefugeID is a platform to unite organizations working with refugees around the world. The volunteers and people working within organizations like the International Rescue Committee or UNHCR can add refugees to the database from the field or the office and upload important documents, such as id cards and birth certificates. Once a refugee is added to the database, not only can other organizations see their details, but the refugees themselves can take control of their profile with a uPort login.

Eventually, anyone around the world could use the database to search and connect with dispersed relatives and friends. The data could also be used by a refugee when seeking asylum or residency in a new country.

Beep Network

https://beep.network

Beep Network notifies users by email and SMS when GDAX adds new markets. Though it currently only supports this one GDAX tracker, we envision adding many others. For example, a contract event tracker would allow users to get an alert when, say, their CryptoKitty gives birth. Users can sign up super easily with traditional social logins, a passwordless magic link, and NOW uPort!

ethtollway

https://github.com/publu/ethtollway

Our project provides a straightforward process for clients to send ERC20 tokens to exchanges to be traded without requiring ether to be present in the clients wallets. This web interface functions using uPort, the 0x orderbook, a small store of ether to fulfill the gas payments needed to forward client tokens.

Clients specify parameters of the token they want to send, and the address they are trying to send to.

ETH Tollway makes full use of the reputation and attestation solutions uPort provides in order to trust the users with deposited ether. This web app is developed with a primary focus on simplification and ease-of-use.

StrasseMusic

We are on a decentralized mission to recognize & reward street artists and performers using Ethereum blockchain technology to offer a successful busking in not just setting the stage, performing, and impressing the crowd enough to incentivize the performers and augment a reputation ecosystem.

Additionally, decentralized validators track the contributions and establish a reinforced consensus. Underprivileged and unrecognized Street artists across the world would have a platform to share their patented creativity through viewers or themselves.

We aim cryptocurrencies contributing to tip jars for a societal cause.
