David, 15, attends the Ramaz School on the Upper East Side and is going to be a sophomore this fall.

Have you worked with code before?

I took a two-week course in my school but it was Khan Academy based and was called Processing JS. It was completely different and wasn’t really coding.

What made you decide to come and work with iOS?

I was initially interested in coding because I wanted to understand the technology behind the apps I use on a daily basis. So when I found out that my friend felt the same way, we decided to do the Software Engineering and iOS courses [at Upperline].

So you went from Web Development to iOS — what are the more surprising things that have come out of iOS compared to Web Dev?

It was really nice going from Ruby to iOS because I found Swift to be a lot easier to learn after learning the basic coding concepts in Ruby. That said, I really dislike iOS errors — way more than Ruby.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve learned?

Probably calling APIs in a program because you can access literally anything, which is really cool. They’re so simple yet so powerful.

Any advice or words of wisdom for future potential students?

I’d just tell them that anyone can code. People often portray coding as something only a select few can do but that’s definitely not the case. It seems scary because you have to write everything from scratch but then you learn it and it’s not so bad.
