Leading the wellness initiative here at Upside is not only fun to do, but a surprisingly rewarding part of my role. Each quarter there’s a new theme around wellness — the four for this year are:

1. Emotional

2. Physical

3. Intellectual

4. Proactive

This quarter, we are focused on physical wellness. We recruited our team to share how they participate in physical wellness, what tips can they share with others, why do they enjoy what they do, and which external speakers they recommend.

One of our teammates sent me a note saying she had taken a mobility workshop with this awesome instructor and felt strongly about bringing him in to share his knowledge with the team. Clayton Weakley teaches a variety of topics — Functional Range Conditioning, KINSTRETCH and overall mobility training, but we brought him in for his DeskRx workshop.

He calls it the movement prescription for your desk job, and it’s designed to alleviate common aches and pains from sitting at a desk. Clayton came in and taught us easy and meaningful, movements that allow for full range of motion in our joints. If you’ve ever spent money on getting a massage or going to a chiropractor, you might want to ask yourself if you’re stretching enough. We had about 50 people attend the workshop and it was interesting to hear the groans and sighs of people working muscles and joints they don’t normally move.

We walked away with a wonderful reminder to get up, move, wear better shoes and clothes to allow more mobility, as well as a PDF handout of movements to practice and a 10 min video of Clayton instructing us through the movements. I continue to practice the training from his workshop and love to see my colleagues getting their stretch on and being conscientious of their wellbeing.
