You follow us on Medium, you’ve read our many blog posts, but how much do you really know about our team? Introducing UI Spotlight, where you’ll get to learn a little more about the great people behind Upstate Interactive, in their own words.

Kent Walker recently joined our team as a software engineer here in Syracuse. His background is in front-end web development and he enjoys designing sites that have responsive, minimalist designs that are easy to navigate. We’re excited to have him on the team!

What brought you to Upstate Interactive?

I met Peter Smith, one of the company’s partners, through a web development bootcamp. He was an instructor, and after he left the bootcamp to pursue other job opportunities, we kept in touch. I’ve worked mostly in IT support, learning web development on the side in hopes of finding a job opportunity. Peter notified me of an opening at UI so I applied and went through thorough interview process and at the end of that process, I was offered the position, which I gladly accepted.

What’s your favorite aspect of working at UI?

I love getting the opportunity to learn new technologies and work on exciting and diverse projects.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve been able to work on?

I’ve been working on a troubleshooting application for a company called Air Innovations. It’s going to be used to help their customers troubleshoot one of their products, Wine Guardian, which is a device that maintains the environment of wine cellars.

Is there anything that excites you right now about the tech scene in Syracuse?

I’m excited about the growth of the tech scene. Working in the Syracuse Tech Garden has afforded me the opportunity to work alongside many other startups doing lots of exciting things from data science to commercial drone use.

Outside of work, what kinds of things can we find you doing?

I love spending time outdoors so kayaking, trail running, hiking, fishing, etc.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Probably having the ability to fly because I’d love to be able to travel anywhere at anytime.
