The days agenda

The insight day was a very rewarding experience and from the event I feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable about careers in HR. During the course of the day we discovered the various roles in HR these ranged from a HR Generalist to roles within employee engagement. Personally, I was most interested in the Learning and Development sector as I believe it would fit nicely with my initial career path in the RAF.

We then looked at the skills that were require in a role in HR these included: curiosity, decisive thinking, skilled influencing, ethical integrity and problem solving. We then took a closer look into different HR roles and were shown the salaries of HR directors and managers.

What I learnt

The event had an intimate number of people, this was a bonus as it allowed us to express ourselves more openly and this was illustrated by the group activity in which we had to solve a HR related issue and present our solution to the rest of the group and were then given feedback. Public speaking wasn’t a problem for me and my team presented our solutions very effectively.

By the end of the day the atmosphere was very relaxed and jokes were exchanged before the final activity begun. This included a discussion and Q&A which reinforced all our knowledge about HR and settled any burning questions.

Conclusion

Overall, the HR insight day was extremely beneficial and I would highly recommend students attend similar events. A big thank you to Uptree and the CIPD team for a great event.
