So, you might think your interview style is en pointe but, according to The Independent, lots of young people are missing out on job opportunities just because they wore the wrong shoes.

Uptree’s decided to put together a short list of style tips for that all important day, and if you were tempted to don those leopard print leggings you love, I warn you now: DON’T DO IT.

Here’s our 5 top tips:

  1. Avoid brown shoes

If you’re wearing blue— which should never be paired with black — opt for grey or navy as a safer choice instead. It might seem silly, but if you’re applying for a corporate job brown shoes are a big no no.

2. Be polished.

Crisply iron your outfit, don’t wear anything with stains/marks, and buff out any scuffs from your shoes.

3. Keep ties and accessories to a tasteful minimal.

While your Heisenberg tie might be your favourite, it might not make the best impression on prospective employers. Those diamante hoops won’t have the positive professional impact you hope for either.

4. Have neutral hairstyle and make-up.

Natural is better when heading for interviews, a green buzz-cut (yes, Zayn Malik I’m looking at you) is likely to make employers think that you aren’t professional no matter how capable you might be. Similarly when it comes to make-up, layers of foundation and contouring might make you feel like a bae on Instagram, but too much make-up may put potential employers off.

5. Finally, whatever you end up choosing — OWN IT!

Nothing is more attractive to an employer than an employee who is comfortable and seems ready for their role.
