Learning and sharing is a core value vital to any person, group, or business. Here at Uptree, we believe this is especially true because we live in a world that is ever-evolving and progressing. There are constantly newer, faster, and better ways of doing things. Whether it be for personal development or to keep your business competitive, growth and success come from learning.

We are fortunate enough to be in a world where enormous amounts of data are at our fingertips. Paperback books, online journals, even audio or video learning tools — you name it. In fact according to David Derbyshire, “Scientists have worked out exactly how much data is sent to a typical person in the course of a year — the equivalent of every person in the world reading 174 newspapers every single day” (Derbyshire, 2011, p.1). This is where the “sharing” part comes into play. If learning is pushing growth and driving efficiency, then sharing that knowledge is the best way to manage your learning.

In short, learning and sharing is a quality that we emphasize in our workplace culture. It boosts efficiency by promoting only the best of everything: ideas, problem-solving, strategies, and more. By doing so, it also enables more efficient and more accurate decision-making, ensuring that cumbersome or unnecessary efforts are made redundant. Finally, it encourages innovation in the workplace.

We’ve just had an Uptree strategy day, where we put our learning and sharing into action. We spent the day sharing ideas to inform our strategy and learning about how we improve and grow. Being purposeful and intentional about our strategy and our growth, we reflected on the past year and all the lessons we learned individually and as a company in order to learn how we can better support each other, our partner employers, and our partner schools this year.

There are numerous different methods of learning and sharing, but we have included a few to get you started:

  1. Run your own personal development session.

If you’ve found something online or read something that has worked in your life, why not share it? Although this could be a formal session, it could also be an informal gathering with friends or colleagues about something you’re passionate about outside of work (fitness, nutrition, etc).

2. Holding Lunch & Learns on your area of the business.

If you have something pertaining to your area of your business, organisation, or group, don’t hoard your knowledge! Share the wealth and have colleagues come along to learn and chat while you have lunch.

3. Constructive feedback and listening effectively.

The most underrated form of learning and sharing: feedback! It might be hard to hear at times, but constructive feedback and listening effectively is probably one of the oldest methods of learning and sharing. When you give feedback, make it constructive by giving examples of how you might approach something.

4. Sharing on social media.

Social media is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to learn and share with the world! It could be in the form of a blog post or a email, or even an Instagram post. Or you could share your source of knowledge directly by posting or retweeting from the article or journal that you found.

If you or your company would like to learn and share with us or find out more about us and our work, get in touch with us via LinkedIn or email us at info@uptree.co. We look forward to hearing from you!
