Okay, so it’s National Work-Life week…so what? There are so many different weeks in the year it’s almost impossible to keep up! Wool Week, Pyjama Week and Curry Week all happen in October and they sound fairly comical in nature. Then looking through the weeks I am suddenly challenged; Space Week, Dyspraxia Week, Dyslexia Week, Braille Week, National Baby Loss Awareness Week, Adoption Week, Brain Tumor Week…and we are still in October.

Life affects us all in so many different ways, and you may be drawn more to some of the days than others depending on your life experiences, but for anybody out there that has a job, there is a continued struggle for work-life balance. One word comes to mind when I think about work-life balance and it’s simple — priorities.

My very first manager who I worked for at the tender age of 18 used to say;

“If you want something done, give it to a busy person”.

This phrase confused me in my younger years as the idea of giving more work to somebody that was already busy made absolutely no sense, but as she explained her thought process, I think I gradually became the person she was talking about. Many employees will strategise when it comes to their running of a business, SWAT analysis, KPIs and PDRs, but the key to work-life balance is one of the most simple…the Prioritisation Chart. For this to be effective you must keep things simple.

Don’t just use the chart for work however, put your whole life here! Time with your loved ones, paying bills, personal projects, education, recreation time, business ideas, money…it should all fit. The first challenge will arise immediately when you start to prioritise, sitting down and trying to think through what is important to you in life.

Give it a go, see how you get on and make today a productive day where you achieve some critical tasks and you do them right away!
