Technology in the Modern World

In a world that is so intertwined with technology, it is almost impossible to imagine life without the efficiency that comes with our modern lifestyle. Could you leave the house without checking Citymapper or Google Maps for the fastest route? What would you do if you couldn’t use your mobile banking device to transfer money to yourself, or top up your card? Our lives are made easier and more efficient with technology, and with advancements being made every day, it is so easy to forget that the world didn’t always use to work like this.

Gemma Francis, The Independent, in her article on technology writes that studies show modern technology is saving the average person two weeks each year. “Self-service checkouts, internet shopping or banking and mobile traffic updates were saving the average Briton around six-and-a-half hours each week,” Francis writes. When you take the time to think about it, it makes sense. But why does it still feel like there just aren’t enough hours in a day?

Technology may be saving us time, but we’re not spending it right. Those “saved” minutes or hours vanish with time spent overworking ourselves or trying to do too many things or squeeze too many appointments into our schedules. Rather than treasuring that “saved” time, we’re using it as a pass to do more. So what should we be doing with that time?

In a world as busy as ours, there is always and will continue to always be an infinite amount of stimuli waiting at our fingertips. After all, technology has also made it easier to access everything and anything — videos, movies, stores, emails, you name it! But rather than continuously letting our brains run amok or constantly being engaged in a new activity, we should set aside that “saved” time for ourselves. Take some time to breathe, to unwind, to do what makes you destress. There is always going to be something else that needs to be done, some person you could be speaking to. Having a good work-life balance comes from setting boundaries for yourself. So block out some time each day for yourself!
