Overview of careers in engineering

Engineering is one of the great professions that has always been crucial in society but is increasingly more important as our world evolves with technological advancements. Engineers encompasses a wide range of disciplines such as civil, electrical, chemical or mechanical and is the profession of applying principles of math and science to develop solutions and bring ideas into reality. Because of the nature of this job and industry, engineers must be creative as well as critical. Creativity and the arts are essential because without it, we could not be innovative in our solutions!

Engineering has certainly left its footprint in the world and is a noble cause to join in respect of the great feats that engineers of the past have achieved. One of the most renowned engineering feats has been electricity. Think about how many things you own that utilise electricity and how wildly different life would be without it!

In fact, no society would succeed without engineering. If you look at any aspect of life, you can probably find an engineering sector associated with it.

Take a basic human necessity like food. Is it free from engineering influence? Not at all. Food is actually connected to many different sectors of engineering such as agricultural engineering. The machinery or technological tools used in farms that produce our food are all thanks to agricultural engineering. It has also led to the increasing efficiency and production of food in the world. Even the development of fertilisers are connected to chemical engineers.

Take another basic human right like healthcare. Have you ever undergone surgery? Surgical theatres are full of complex machinery that are all attributed to engineering! In this way, engineering has quite literally been the difference between life and death. With the use of more and more advanced equipment, it is no doubt that engineers will continue to be of great importance in this field of work.

So the next time you’re out and about, try and see exactly how many things you can link to the field of engineering. I can assure you that you will find almost everything can be traced back to innovation and engineering!
