Exciting news! Urban Archive now has an amazing new 3D layer. You can use it to explore built sites and structures around New York, as well as in any of our partner cities. Check it out!

Up until this point, we’ve produced the Urban Archive map using NYC Open Data to spatialize the geolocated collections of our museum, library, and agency partners. Now, our immersive mapping platform enables a heightened experience of otherwise static 2D lots and building footprints. Once the feature is activated, users can right-click on the map to pan around and view the evolution of the city’s built environment.

Like anything we build in Urban Archive, our goal with the addition of 3D functionality is to provide tools that help us better understand the cities we inhabit. This new map layer contextualizes Urban Archive’s historical data with contemporary data, revealing the modern realities of the city’s growth and development.

At the time, 3D is only available in our web app, but it can be used on any device, be it a laptop, desktop or mobile phone. If you’re interested in seeing what improvements and projects are up next in our development roadmap, you can do so here.
