I’m incredibly competitive when it comes to racing, be it road or mtb I like to give a good representation of myself at races. Before I go any further please know I’m not a top 15 finishing racesnake, nonetheless I like to give it a go. Racing for me is a great way to push myself to the limits of breaking point, me versus the clock. As I’m sure many of you know when it’s race day you’re totally focused on the route and your fellow competitors not to mention the butterflies in your stomach. When that start gun goes off its time to get the rubber down, go go go! However there’s a problem when one’s racing, you’re spending half your time looking at your cycling computer or checking to see where the rest of the competitors are, this is all happening while you’re cycling past amazingly gorgeous scenery. I’m privileged enough to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, South Africa was made for cycling. I can hop on my bike and go around the entire Cape peninsula or I can drive forty minutes out of town and head into the Stellenbosch mountains, where you’ll find some of the most amazing manicured mtb trails. These areas and many more hold races throughout the year, so while you’re looking down keeping an eye at your average heartrate how about you take a look up and enjoy the views around you.
