Why second cities succeed

It`s not about capitals, stupid. Building on long history of federalism Germany`s second cities such as Duesseldorf, Cologne and Essen have always been a strong competiton for Berlin in many ways.

A traditional hub for both architecture and the arts: Düsseldorf.

Vincent Carry shows common principles of Europes first class cities in the second row.

The common ground shared by these cities is that only by embracing culture and modern creative scenes have they managed to start truly punching their weight. We are talking about cities that have carved out a niche as “cool and creative” metropolises (by embracing hipsterism and developing shared spaces and community districts), cities that make an active contribution to Europe’s artistic scenes in the fields of music, the visual arts, graphics, video games and cuisine.
