Short, Sweet, and a little Intense.

One of the overall objectives of the course was to view public policy from an urban lens. I now have a much more robust understanding of the complex relationships between cities and public policy and how they shape each other. As I reflect on the road travelled, I am impressed by the distance in a short six weeks. From seeing like a city to multiple outlooks including municipal, regional, provincial, federal, and societal lens — I may now bleed urban policy.

I have come to appreciate the role of urban governance across the political spectrum. Perhaps my biggest takeaway is the personal reflections that I submitted and read on the course blog and the career reflections inspired by the numerous Munk School alumni and guests that offered their time and mentorship. Sometimes it feels like I am travelling well beyond the speed limit on a highway; between other commitments in and outside the academic setting, I can cover much ground but with little time to stop and smell the roses. However, the personal reflections and weekly blogposts offered me the opportunity to slow down and appreciate urban policy, bike lanes, and the chance to network and consider future involvement in the field. Unlike the experience of driving a car to get from one destination to another, as it has often felt with other course work, this class felt more like an enjoyable bike ride along a protected bike lane where I was able to take in and appreciate more information.

Finally, working on our group for United Way offered us the opportunity to consider everything we have learned in the almost two years of the MPP program and make original policy contributions — this has been a source of pride for me. Recognizing the role of urban policy, the important work of professionals in the field, the significant community contributions by organizations like United Way, I am feeling validated and inspired to pursue a career in urban policy — finding windows of opportunity to champion progressive and effective change.

While Urban Policy PPG2017 was short, sweet, and a little intense — it has been one of my favourite and most consequential course selections of my Master in Public Policy program.
