Sixbillionninehundredeightythreemillionfivehundredfortythreethousandsevenhundredtwelve, pretty big figure for a world population of 7.5 billion in 2016. That is the number of Smartphones around the world.Very smart, isn´t it? I would say it depends on how we use this piece technology in our daily lives. But let me tell you what really smart is: Smart Cities. Welcome to Urbes.

Urbes. A blog focusing on the rapid change of technology, focusing on smart cities around the world. So, first of all what is a smart city? Having the most smartphones per inhabitant in your city would not necessarily mean that you are living in a smart city. But what makes a city smart?

A city will be considered as smart city if it integrates multiple information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT). This simple means that urban informatics, technology and information will be used to make our lives easier, enjoyable and much more efficient. ICT allows not only to improve the quality and performance of a city, but also to reduce costs and discover inefficient used resources in different channels.

Smart cities by definition should use the information technology for the following:

1. Efficient use of physical infrastructure.

2. Allow inhabitants by giving away their information to participate in governmental decision making.

3. Learn, adapt and understand the people in the city to make their home even more intelligent.

By using the right information and technologies for finding solutions within a city, smart cities can deal with issues like energy waste and reducing carbon emissions, while improving the life for everybody.

according to 2014 report from IHS Technology (NYSE: IHS)

As you can see in the graph above there will be a tremendous rise in the number of smart cities until 2025.

Excited? You should be. We just get started.
