To say that racism is a thing of the past is an offense. We have overcome many issues throughout history, but racism still very much present in many places around the world

February is the Black History Month, and I think history is a reminder to be better in the present and the future, and movies are a great platform to both reflect and make a statement about the situations that take place.

So this is an opportunity to highlight two modern movies:

Get Out (2017)

Get Out is an unique haunting movie that will leave you speechless since the very first scene. I was confused basically during the entire movie because it goes really deep into things that take a while to be explained and that could even feel too crazy to be true; but this is where it manages to create a social statement: as crazy as it seems, it’s undeniable that it deal with a reality both in the past and present.

12 Years A Slave (2013)

Steve McQueen, one of my all time favorite directors, made this movie with a cast that couldn’t have failed to represent these characters, providing the audience with deep sentiment. This is definitely a movie that is uncomfortable to see but one that needs to be talked about for sure, after all discomfort opens up discussions. From the visceral scenes to the most heartfelt ones, 12 Years A Slave represents slavery in a masterful cinematic way.
