November is National Prematurity Awareness Month, and yesterday, November 17, was World Prematurity Day. Not many people are aware of the complications and expenses that come with having a premature baby and this is the time to get the word out on it. There are many organizations that are currently taking donations to help premature babies and families. Any baby who is born before week 37 is considered to be premature. A full term pregnancy is 40 weeks, but 1 in 10 babies in the United States are born premature. World wide it is estimated that 15 million babies are born premature.

Many families are not able to cover all the medical costs that come with having a premature baby. This is why organizations such as March of Dimes are very important. The March of Dimes helps families pay for costs they cannot afford to, and even helps to bring awareness to the complications that come with premature babies. March of Dimes has lead the way in awareness for this complicated medical issue, and they also do research to bring the premature birth rate down. Many of the babies who are born premature have to spend days to weeks in the hospital, and parents have to suffer though the terrible time. In the United States it is premature births are one of the main reason why infants died.

The March of Dimes foundation partners with different companies and organizations to take donations. My own job does this twice a year, and has a successful run. Most people are willing to donate, even if it is a dollar or two. During the months of March and November we are able to raise money and also awareness with each of our customers. It feels good to know that we can help and others are also willing to help premature babies and their families.

The March of Dimes foundation is the most well know organization but there are more. All of them are there for parents to help with costs and support the families during the difficult situation of having a premature baby.
