When deciding what topic to write about I have the choice to go light and sweet or dark and serious. Since our lives seem to be always saturated with terrible news, I always find it best to go with good and uplifting stories. Yet, recently we were all shocked with the news that the lead singer of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, had committed suicide. As a fan of Linkin Park’s music and Chester Bennington’s powerful voice and lyrics, it has been especially difficult to deal with his suicide. I’ve read every article and news clip that has come out about his suicide hoping to find some solace in this tragedy.

There is a pain that won’t ever go away, and this is just coming from a fan. I can’t imagine what his family and close friends are feeling. I pray that they will heal in time.

Suicide is a topic that isn’t talked about. Mental health is a topic that has just started to get more attention and acceptance. As a society we are slowly starting to realize that mental health issues are common, and not something to ignore or judge people on.

Artists have the special ability to put their emotions in their work, and artists who suffer from mental illnesses are able to put their fears and suffering in their work. As an audience we don’t always see that pain for what it is because we take their work and see it through our eyes to help us with our own issues. This is what happens with a lot of music, especially music from Chester Bennington. His lyrics showed the storm going on in his head, and they brought comfort and healing to a lot of fans. The part we were not able to see was the suffering Chester himself was going through, and ultimately that was too much for him.

We will miss his passion for music. His fans have honored his memory with gatherings, postings and even creating a suicide prevention program called SAVE. We will always have Linkin Park’s music to fall back in, but the music world has lost another great voice. May Chester rest in peace. We thank you for your music.
