Alice Cronshaw reviews Everything Everything’s gig at the O2 Academy Leeds, 6th March 2018

Everything Everything produce music that is difficult to categorise, and their gigs are no different. With their growing success and popularity the crowds have grown larger and got younger too. However, the remnants of their old crowd were not lost at their gig in the O2 Academy Leeds. Around the edges of the venue the middle-aged (roughly) crowd hung around, all with a pint in their hand and most likely a suit on from their day at work. The centre of the crowd seemed to contain the fans who were more keen to push forwards, but most still weren’t younger than university age.

The band opened with the title track from their most recent album ‘A Fever Dream’; they kept the styling theme from previous years of the band, wearing matching jackets, apart from frontman Jonathan Higgs who was wearing something a little more unusual. This tour it was an orange trench coat that the girl in front of me succinctly described by commenting that it looked as though he’d just broken out of jail.

The crowd truly got behind the band for their older hits, but there was a slight lull during the lesser-known songs from their most recent record, possibly due to the more personal and introspective nature of this, or just the reaction most bands receive when playing new material.

The setlist encompassed a nice range of songs, although half of them were unsurprisingly from ‘A Fever Dream’ — they also played ‘Breadwinner’, off the EP ‘A Deeper Sea’ released a week prior (27th February), and ‘QWERTY Finger’ (from their first album ‘Man Alive’ released in 2010).

Everything Everything’s latest EP ‘A Deeper Sea’ is available now. Hear ‘Breadwinner’ for yourself.

The concert closed with ‘No Reptiles’, a fan favourite that got everyone dancing and singing, and even brought an attempted mosh pit. It finished at least 20 minutes before curfew in classic Everything Everything style, letting everyone get home at a reasonable time — and for some reviewers even in time to get to Kuda Tuesday back in York.
