Over the evaluation of The Beast, Riding the Rails and Dodging Narcos on the Migrant Trail, Martinez dives deeply into the challenges Central American migrants faced when traveling north to the United States in search of a better life. Over the duration of our semester we studied different perspectives, eras, and areas that are involved within or around the United States border. When referring to the relationship between history and current events you are able to understand why events happened, are happening and access actions for the future. Looking back at the history of the border, times haven’t changed but simply evolved over time. Migrants still travel deadly routes to reach the United States, battle cartels and corrupt officials, and in this story facing dangerous freight trains. The U.S border had a rough start with its creation in the early 1900s, agents were often racially profiling individuals and treating them extremely harshly. The Beast faces readers with the harsh reality of. U.S border policies, trafficking, and migration throughout Central America as well as southern North America. Martinez sheds light on the ones who have fallen or that been forgotten traveling the dangerous route giving them a voice through his book. The relationship between studying history and understanding the present allows valuable insight towards the shape of the future. History often offers analysis on possible change, recurring themes, issues providing comprehension to make judgmental decisions to creat a better future.
