HCI Final Exam

Themer launcher is an attractive yet simple home screen replacement app against custom Android launcher.

OBJECTIVE

Identify usability issues and pain points with 10 tasks.

TEST TASKS

  1. Choosing a theme
  2. Customizing icons
  3. Changing themes back to themes that you already downloaded
  4. Checking latest news
  5. Checking the weather
  6. Checking E-mail, calls, messages
  7. Changing back to the default home screen of your phone
  8. Showing off your theme to any social networks

Analysis

I downloaded the app on my phone and used it for a week.

Task 1: Choosing a theme.

There are a lot of themes to choose from and it very easy to apply. There are categories to norrow down your options.

Task 2: Customizing icons

Thats it. Its nothing. You cannot customize icons since the icons are already attached to the theme that you downloaded .

Task 3: Changing themes back to themes that you already downloaded

You can easily change back to whatever theme that you have downloaded.

Task 4: Checking latest news

There are themes in themer that has a news corner. Everytime you are connected to the internet, it updates the news.

Task 5: Checking the weather

Also there are themes in themer that has a weather corner. Themer is connected to google which updates them everytime you are connected to the internet. For example:

Task 6: Checking E-mail, calls, messages

Themer has also a notification whenever you have new e-mail, missed calls, and messages.

Task 7: Changing back to the default home screen of your phone

There is also a setting which brings you back to the default homescreen.

Task 8: Showing off your theme to any social networks

There is also an option where you can show off your theme to any social network sites.

Findings

Using the Themer app is very easy and fun but my only problem with it is when using an icon that links to an app like the music player, it never remembers what app to link to specially when you have two or more apps that do the same thing.

For example:

It always plays from the soundcloud app. It never asks me to choose from my diffrent music players.

Recommendation:

I recommend to let the app ask the user which app to link to if there is two or more apps that does the same thing.
