Students, teachers, and USAID team up for better health in East Java.

“I feel more at home now,” says a young Indonesian girl, reflecting on how her dormitory’s upgraded sanitation facilities, which now feature much-needed shower and toilet stalls, have improved her quality of life. “Studying is easier — we’re more comfortable and relaxed. We’re healthier.”

In a bid to improve hygiene and sanitation facilities and practices in the classroom and beyond, USAID’s Initiative for Water and Sanitation Improvement through Networking Support (IWINS) project consults with students, civic officials, and religious leaders to identify and resolve pressing water and sanitation concerns. With interactive educational workshops and infrastructure renovations, IWINS’ inclusive approach is winning praise and helping real behavior change to take root in Indonesia.
