As seen in the Mary Meeker Report of 2016, India’s exposure to the internet is growing at a remarkable rate. According to Mashable, India is bringing free WiFI to over 1000 villages in less than six months. Silicon Valley companies like Microsoft and Google have made notable efforts to bring more Indians online.

Additionally, internet in India is getting cheaper — telecom operator Reliance Jio has introduced free 4G LTE data which is making plans more affordable within the country. Mashable cites a projected growth in Indian interned users from 400 million to over 700 million by 2020.

Another Mashable article also cites India as the leader in downloaded Android apps in 2016. The second largest internet and smartphone market in the world, India downloaded more apps than the United States and Brazil in 2016. The article also noted the potential growth within the Indian market which still exists.

The Meeker Report and Mashable articles note that the largest smartphone market today is Android, and the largest growing market for Android and internet use is India. These facts are especially useful to note when designing a new app or MVP and deciding where to target it or what platform to utilize.
