In the beginning, there was only everything and nothing. Everything and nothing was uniform, continuous and infinite. It was all that ever was or ever would be.

Eventually a discontinuity occurred in everything and nothing. Everything noticed itself, and distinguished this from nothing. This recognition event caused a thing to come into into existence from the uniform sea of continuity.

The thing distinguished. It distinguished itself from everything and nothing. It noticed that, as opposed to everything and nothing, it could be.

It noticed it could choose how it would be.

It was the first being.

The being tried to be all the ways it could. It made up names for its ways of being — strong, weak, hot, cold, passive, aggressive, intrigued, bored.

The being became bored. It tried all the other ways of being, but after time, always came back to being bored. This continued for an interminable period, until the being had an insight.

The being decided to alleviate its boredom by creating another being. The being distinguished itself as Zero and called the other being One. The beings regarded each other for a time, and distinguished everything about each other. After a period this too became boring.

Zero decided to distinguish something new called a ‘game’. Zero told One that a game is where it is more important to be in one place rather than to be in another place. One liked this idea and they played the game.

Zero decided that being over there was most important, so One and Zero went over there as quickly as they could. The first one there was the winner, and the second one the loser. Then One decided that being over there was most important, and it went over there faster than Zero. It won, Zero lost.

They went here, there and everywhere. They were interested for a time. But eventually, this game became old and Zero and One were bored again.

Zero and One created new and more complex games to entertain themselves, but eventually these always became boring. They pondered their dilemma. One decided that there had to be something at stake to make the game interesting. They made wagers, and the winner could compel the loser to do things. This was novel and for a period the beings were excited and interested.

Eventually they became bored again. Wagers weren’t meaningful because Zero and One were omnipotent and eternal. There was nothing really at stake because there were no consequences. They thought about how to make the game have meaning. After a period, Zero came upon a solution.

For the game to be meaningful, the beings would have to risk everything. However, since they were omnipotent and eternal, risking everything was really risking nothing. So for the game to be fun, they had to risk everything and disguise any knowledge of their own powers. Losing meant giving up everything for nothing.

So Zero and One created the world. They created the mountains, rivers, oceans and plains. They created the sun, planets, solar systems and galaxies. They were excited at the prospect of playing their new game.

They divided their consciousness up into many different combinations of zeros and ones, all of which were prevented from having any knowledge of their true nature. The many beings would believe themselves mortal, so they would play for the ultimate stakes. Their very lives would be at risk.

The Game of Life was created. This is one of its stories.
