On the 26th of October 2019, the last leg of UXPH Roadshow happened in Manila. This event showcased the knowledge of user experience design to cater to tech professionals and businesses. The volunteers that represented the User Experience Society — De La Salle University included Ariel Golez, Annika Pascasio, Michaela Diño, and Shasha Villaroman.

Why did they volunteer for UXPH?

The women volunteered for a variety of reasons. For one of the women, it was her first time to participate and she was interested in what the experience had to offer. The rest had some idea of what would be in store hence joined to support, build on management skills and learn more.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” ~Elizabeth Andrew

What did they do?

Around six o’clock in the morning, all the volunteers joined forces to put together freebies for the participants and sponsors. Freebies included: stickers, key chains, reusable bags, gift cards and lanyards with IDs.

Once the freebies were organized and participants started coming in the assigned tasks varied as the day progressed. Soon the volunteers covered different parts of the event. From doing registration, distributing shirting, going off-site to acquire the necessary last-minute supplies, assisting the speakers with their workshops and handling UXPH’s social media account throughout the day.

In addition to working the volunteers were so able to socialize with business owners, sponsors, designers, developers and so much more.

What was the best thing about volunteering for the event?

According to the volunteers, the best part of the event was simply participating. From joining workshops, design challenges, and meeting new people. One volunteer said that one of the best things about volunteering was that she was able to attend a workshop for free. In that workshop, she was able to learn, mingle with the participants and assist the speaker.

This is not the first time the members of User Experience Society — De La Salle University have volunteered for an event and certainly won’t be the last. Volunteering helps students network with professionals in their field of interest, perk up the resume, spark new interests, gain experience and exposure.
