How UX Changed My Perception in Life

I always came to UX Society’s UX & Chill sessions.

A year ago, I decided to join an unaccredited organization in our school named User Experience Society for no reason at all. I just went by their stall and started conversing with the person handling the sign-up for the new members. Not knowingly, that guy whom I talked to is the actually the president of the organization. Honestly, when he was explaining to me what User Experience Society is about and what it is for, I actually didn’t understand a thing. He kept mentioning the word ‘user’ and I just didn’t care what he was murmuring about. But still, I signed up.

Fast forward to the present, I’m very much grateful to have made that choice in stopping by in their stall and be a member of that organization. After multiple talks and speakers they hosted, my perception of the world has greatly changed. That the meaning of the word ‘user’ goes beyond its basic definition. Users are not just merely the recipient of our products being created everyday. Users tell you a unique story about your product.

Now I’m part of the UX Consultancy team.

Day by day, lots of products are being sold and being designed in the market. These products are thoroughly studied and strategically marketed to people whom we call ‘users.’ However, the problem about most of these products is that they don’t usually try to focus on the experience of the users using their products. Often times, aesthetics outweighs the total experience.

In relating to my life right now, I’m very obsessed in thinking always about the ‘user.’ By user, I mean my professors who would read my articles, recipients of my emails, my friends, my parents, just everyone. I’m obsessed in thinking whether my papers would make my professor enjoy reading it, if my personality would make my friends be satisfied with me to be their companion, or if my parents are grateful to have me as their child.

This time around, I was part of the recruitment team.

UX has taught me to be selfless in all my endeavors. UX enabled me to shut my mouth for a while and start hearing stories from other people. UX has inspired me to look beyond myself and start deepening my mind about others; their experiences and their feelings. UX has opened my eyes in learning to see the world as how others perceive it also. Finally, UX has changed me from a man for my own to a man for others.

Thanks for reading!

This is actually my first article here in Medium. I apologize if it isn’t that very well- written, yet. As they say, “In order to get better, get started. “
