The Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) program at the University of San Francisco is renowned for its rigorous curriculum, challenging students to acquire comprehensive knowledge and proficiency in various data science tools and techniques. While the workload can be demanding, the faculty and staff understand the importance of providing opportunities for students to unwind and rejuvenate. This article will share some of the memorable social events organized for Cohort 11 during 2022–2023.

After Dark Thursday Nights at Exploratorium Museum (August 2022)

As the summer boot camp neared its end and we awaited the commencement of the fall module, we had the perfect opportunity to unwind and explore the wonders of San Francisco. We had our first event, called After Dark Thursday Nights, at the Exploratorium Museum in August. Embarking on this casual museum adventure along the view of Embarcadero, we found ourselves surrounded by captivating exhibits and in the delightful company of our classmates, faculty, and staff. This exciting night was an unforgettable experience that deepened our appreciation for science and art and brought us closer as a cohesive cohort.

Angel Island Hike and Picnic (October 2022)

In October, we did the much-awaited Angel Island hike and picnic. Taking a ferry departing from the San Francisco Ferry Terminal at the San Francisco Ferry Building to Angel Island, the 30-minute cruise gradually distanced us from the city’s hustle and drew us closer to the captivating beauty of Angel Island.

Angel Island, though small, offers a wealth of natural wonders to explore within a few hours. As we commenced our hike, we were greeted by breathtaking vistas that showcased the island’s unique allure. During our hike, bonds within our cohort deepened as we engaged in heartfelt conversations about life and shared our San Francisco experiences.

Reaching the mountaintop rewarded us with a magnificent view of the entire island, including the city skyline, iconic bridges, and the vast expanse of the ocean. Our descent led us to a secluded beach, where we relished a well-deserved picnic lunch. We indulged in playful activities like soccer and cherished the camaraderie that flourished during our excursion.

Disco Taco Tuesday at Underdogs Cantina (February 2023)

Another fun event we had was in the form of Disco Taco Tuesday at the Underdogs Cantina in February. In American culture, Taco Tuesday is a cherished tradition where people come together to indulge in delectable tacos or other Mexican delights. This event offered us a chance to unwind and savor some delicious treats in the middle of a demanding week.

As we savored our meals, we explored the exciting features of this unique local bar. The venue was brimming with an assortment of board games and fun toys, from mini racing tracks to mini robot boxers and battling tops. We ventured into an upstairs section where classic arcade games awaited us, evoking a sense of nostalgia and childhood glee.

The event allowed us to momentarily set aside our academic commitments and immerse ourselves in the joy of camaraderie. As we grooved to the beat of Taco Tuesday, the bonds we forged during this fun-filled gathering continued to flourish and enrich our journey through the MSDS program.

Vibrant Picnic at Golden Gate Park (April 2023)

Later, our program organized a vibrant and unforgettable picnic in April at Golden Gate Park. The atmosphere was exciting as students, faculty and staff members, and their families gathered to enjoy the nice weekend and make friends outside of class.

Underneath the warm and welcoming sun, the event kicked off with delicious food and refreshing drinks served amidst the green expanse of the park. Laughter and chatter filled the air as students and faculty took the opportunity to unwind and connect with one another beyond the confines of the classroom. The picnic provided a perfect setting for relaxing and forging new friendships, including with four-legged friends.

As the day progressed, the park came alive with various activities. Friendly soccer games unfolded, showcasing the students’ competitive spirit and ability to work together as a team. Amidst the cheering and playful banter, the true essence of the event shone through — an opportunity for everyone to relax, let loose, and embrace the joy of togetherness.

Graduation Party at Palm House (June 2023)

At the end of June 2023, our program hosted a joyous and memorable Graduation Party, which brought together students, faculty, and staff to commemorate the accomplishments of the Master of Data Science Cohort 11 at Palm House, San Francisco.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation as the graduates prepared to embark on the next chapter of our lives. A highlight of the evening was a heartwarming speech given by one of the students, expressing gratitude towards the esteemed faculty members who had guided and supported us throughout our academic journey. Our program director, Diane, took the time to write personalized cards for every student, extending her heartfelt congratulations. This gesture exemplified the caring and supportive environment fostered within the program.

This event marked a bittersweet moment, as some of the students were moving out of the city right after graduation. However, the memories forged on this special night will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts, serving as a reminder of our growth, accomplishments, and the incredible community we were a part of.
