Seoul Mate

The story of Jae Yi and Mei Ling

“ I don’t know how it is that you are so familiar to me, how every whisper brings me closer to the impossible conclusion that I have known you before, I have loved you before, in another time, a different place, some other existence.” by Lang Leav

Seoul, as we all know it, is a city full of wonders, a perfect blend between modern and traditional buildings. Be it a visit to grand palaces, traditional Hanok houses or the science fiction architecture building style of Dongdaemun, Seoul is a never-ending destination for both locals and foreigners, and for some, it is a place for soul searching.

And so here we are in Seoul, delighted for the photo shoot of Jae Yi and Mei Ling, our favorite couple. Though it is currently raining heavily here since it’s July and we are in the midst of the rainy season, nothing can ever stop us from being excited for this photo shoot. At first we were worried, but we believe that with faith and prayers, everything will eventually be perfect. And so the day finally came in and our prayers are heard, it was a bright and beautiful sunny, and like a fairy tale, everything finally falls into place as the way we wanted it to be. The photo shoot ended with a big success, everyone is happy and so here we are, proud to present to you, the love story of Jae Yi and Mei Ling.

Our first shoot is taken right in the heart of Korea, Gyeongbokgung which when translated means “Palace greatly blessed by heaven” is a place where many important historic event occurred. Built by King Taejo in 1395, it is a place where Joseon dynasty was born, a founding basis for a country which in time becomes known as the nation of Korea.

The Story of Jae Yi and Mei Ling

Moving forward centuries later, Gyeongbokgung now is a major tourist attraction for both locals and foreigners, and for some it is a witness of many untold stories. One of them is the story of Jae Yi and Mei Ling. For the couple, Gyeongbokgung is more than just a palace; it is a place where they first met and a place where their love story begins.

Mei Ling first came to Seoul in 2014 and there is nothing about the city that she doesn’t fell in love with. From spicy kimchi to K-Pop, for her everything was just so lovable about Korea. Her 2 weeks trip to Seoul back then in December 2014 left her with a beautiful and memorable impression about the country, but it was her meet up with Jae Yi that would forever change the course of her life. On the first day of her trip, Meiling was accompanied by her Korean friend for sightseeing to Gyeongbokgung, and Jae Yi was brought along by her friend on the trip. Excited to meet foreigners, Jae Yi was introduced by his friend to Mei Ling and when they first met each other, it was like love at first sight. There was something about Jae Yi that pulls me in said Mei Ling, it was something indescribable. She told us as if she had met Jae Yi previously in another time, a different place, or perhaps some other existence. Maybe this is what they called “Seoul mate” she recalls.

And so the two instantly connects with each other on their first meetup and on the remaining 2 weeks of the trip, Jae Yi accompanied Mei Ling on her travel. He then took her to various hot spots in Seoul from Bukchon Hanok Village to Insadong. The two told us that even though they only spend time together for a short period back then, it felt as if they had known each other for a long time. Hearing their story, it kinda makes us rethink about what the elders have always said, that everyone is born with a soul mate, it just takes patience, and on the right time you will find the one. Unfortunately, for both of them the story never turned out smoothly in the beginning, Meiling needs to go back to finish her university in Taipei and the hardships of long distance begins to haunt them. Nevertheless, as they keep in touch with each other, their feelings grew stronger and in the end they both realized that it is the kind of love worth fighting for.

After finishing her studies, Mei Ling took a big decision by moving to Korea. It was hard in the beginning said Meiling during our interview with her, adjusting to a new set of culture and learning a new language seems impossible at first, but then she said nothing is ever too hard when you truly love someone. Nearly 3 years down the road, Meiling, now fluent in Korean have fully adjusted herself to the Korean life. As she recalled back to her memories, she told us that it was probably one of the best decision that she has ever made in her life. As they both revisit the palace as a couple for the photoshoot, the couple told us “Though we pass through this palace countless of times as we visit downtown Seoul, Gyeongbokgung will always have a special place in our hearts”.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called Hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty.
The village name “Bukchon Hanok” literally translates to northern village, came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon stream and Jongno.
Reflecting Seoul’s 600 years of history, we took photos here since it is the perfect place for a casual walk and to experience Korean culture at its deepest roots.

Home to more than a hundred galleries, over 40% of the nation’s antique stores are clustered in the Insa-dong area, and they sell more valuable antiques compared to any other places in Korea. The galleries and the antique stores are the heartbeat of Insa-dong. Both locals and foreigners can experience and see traditional Korean culture firsthand.

As we scroll through the main road in Insa-dong for the photo shoot, we discover the alleys on each side hidden within the area, and in the alleys we found many traditional restaurants, teahouses and cafes. Though we have visited the area a number of times, during the photoshoot, we realize that there is always something new to find and uncover in Insa-dong.

At the end the photoshoot, we were satisfied said the couple. For them it was a moment worth cherishing for and as we finished the photoshoot, we ended the day with a delicious dinner.
