NO EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONGRATULATIONS DR JO GRADY ON YOUR HISTORIC ELECTION AS UCU GENERAL SECRETARY

We congratulate Dr Jo Grady on her historic election as the next General Secretary of the University and College Union. Jo Grady was elected on a record turnout, and secured 64% of the vote after the second round of counting. Grady is the first UCU General Secretary to have worked in tertiary education. She is a founding member of USSbriefs, an activist group comprising university staff and students who came together in April 2018 to launch an intervention in the midst of the pensions dispute. Grady’s expertise on industrial relations and on pensions has been crucial in the USS dispute, and to the ongoing influence USSbriefs has had in shaping the debate about the strike — and in the wider debates about the future of higher and further education. The USSbriefs collective is enormously excited by the prospect of Dr Jo Grady’s leadership of UCU, given the ambition and acuity of the proposals outlined in her campaign manifesto.
