Don’t call it a comeback. Kesha was bound to deliver strong on the single for Rainbow, her first album since 2012. She does that and more with the soulful track “Praying,” which surpasses satisfaction for fans who have been waiting for the pop star’s return.
The music video adds spiritual undertones in a dreamlike mecca of redemption.
This follows her long legal battle against Dr. Luke, the former CEO of Sony Music’s Kemosabe Records, whom she reported sexual assault allegations against in 2014. This barred her from making music per her contract, and Kesha dropped the charges in 2016.
Unlike her party anthems of the past, “Praying” is an emotional hymn. Kesha takes the high road, à la Michelle Obama, with the chorus:
I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’
This song unapologetically lays out her emotions and sheds light to her journey. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the single and upcoming album, set to release August 11, are the obstacles she’s overcome to get to this point.
It isn’t often an artist can make art from the inspiration of once being forbidden to create. It’s almost as uncommon for the average person to pay for music in the digital age. This album should take special exception for fans.
