Listen, you don’t need to like country-western. You don’t even need to like Christmas music. You just need to have taste.

And don’t even come at me with Mariah Carey — she’s fine, but this isn’t about her. This is about Kacey Musgraves and why her Christmas album is better than everyone else’s.

First of all, it’s nostalgically daydreamy in a way that tricks you into thinking every holiday-related memory you have is beautiful. Even the sad songs are so fucking pretty, they’ll make you say, “What depressing family Christmas celebration of 1999?! My life is, and has always been perfect, just like this album.”

Second, she has a song with Willie Nelson titled “A Willie Nice Christmas” and it’s definitely about smoking weed. This is her only original song on the album and it’s great; very true to her progressive country chic-ness.

Third, she covers that Chipmunk song “Christmas Don’t Be Late,” and it isn’t annoying as sin — who knew that was possible!

And finally her “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is the grandest version of the song I have ever heard. It makes me feel a lot of things. I, like, want to propose to someone with it?

I know some people believe that making a Christmas album signifies when an artist is dying out but NO NO. Not here, not now, and not with Kacey. It’s only up from here, girlfriend.
