Yachty & I:

Lil Yatchy, a.k.a. “Lil Boat,” is an enigma in the Rap Game, and not one I’m in any rush to figure out. I first laid eyes on Yatchy’s vibrant red dreads during the iconic 2016 XXL Freshman Cypher which also featured the stylings of Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, and Denzel Curry. Before that cypher, I had only heard rumors of Lil Yatchy, none of which were very complimentary. After listening to that cypher many times, half of which were through watching other viewers reacting to it, I didn’t see any validations in the rumors I heard. Yatchy came through with what I thought was a very solid verse, especially in juxtaposition with some of the oth(Uzi)ers.

Unfortunately, that lead me to listen to more of Lil Yatchy.

On to the Track:

Production:

The beat absolutely slaps, let’s be honest. Ricky Racks did his thing. His only mistake was allowing Yatchy anywhere near it.

Hook:

Mister Boat,

Just because you understand how to alliterate does not mean everything can or should be alliterated. Nipples, noodles, needles. They all start with “N”, but just because they do doesn’t mean they should be used together.

Love, Kevin

“Play with that pussy like peek-a-boo, uh” is super catchy, I’ll give him that, but I die a little inside every time it gets stuck in my head. Luckily, the hook has more lyrics. Yatchy cleverly adds, “Play with money like peek-a-boo, oh,” just to change things up a little.

There’s more, but I’ll spare you.

Verse 1:

I don’t hate it, it’s exactly why I didn’t hate the XXL verse: there’s no auto-tune. Yatchy was just rapping, which I find way more tolerable than his usual high-pitched squeals. It would be kinda hard to mess up this beat though. There’s nothing spectacular about it, but there are a few lines I feel compelled to address:

“She blow that dick like a cello.” — Have you ever seen anyone play a cello Yatchy?

“Play with that kitty like hello.” — I won’t lie, it made me chuckle.

“Young nigga fly like a pigeon.” — If Yatchy were a bird, he’d most definitely be a pigeon.

Verses 2,3,&4:

Migos, why?

I understand “Bad & Boujee” was the biggest song in the world for a couple weeks, but it was most definitely NOT because of the Lil Uzi feature. The trio should’ve pulled Ricky Racks aside and told him to pull Yatchy off the track.

What do I think?:

It’s a fun track and I’ll probably replay it a couple times for a laugh or two. Migos honestly should have taken it and used it for themselves. Quavo would’ve probably killed the hook.

I called Yatchy an enigma because he has talent, that much is clear, but the way he materializes his talents saddens me. He could be a pretty cool artist when (if) he grows up.

Grade:

5/10

*2/10 if not for Migos

Lil Yachty speaking on “Peek-a-b00” in clubs

P.S.

After writing this review, I stumbled upon Lil Yatchy’s interview with The Breakfast Club. During the interview, Yatchy explained that when he goes out to the club, which he doesn’t very often, the DJ would play one of Yatchy’s songs but because Yatchy doesn’t make music for the club, it would sound out of place. “Peek-a-boo” was made so that DJs could play a song by Yatchy without throwing off the vibe on the dance floor. I can respect that, but it ultimately doesn’t change how I feel about the track.
