Temple History:
During the reign of Aurangzeb, the Mughals were destroying Hindu temples across the country. However, when his soldiers failed to destroy the Nagvasuki Temple, Aurangzeb himself came to Prayag to destroy the temple.
The story states that as soon as Aurangzeb took out his sword to destroy the temple, the ferocious form of Nagvasuki descended on Earth and the tyrant failed to scratch even the wall of the temple.
The story behind how Lord Nagvasuki came to reside at this place has been stated in the Padma Purana. During the Samudra Manthan or churning of the ocean milk, he was tied around the Sumeru mountain and used as a long rope. This event caused a lot of injuries to his body and he was exhausted.
Therefore, he went to Mandrachal Mountain to rest but could not do so since his body was burning up. Lord Vishnu advised him to go to Prayagraj and bathe in the cool water of River Saraswati. Following this instruction, Lord Nagvasuki reached the said place and was successful in resting his body.
When he was ready to leave after getting his fill of rest, the sages and demigods requested him to reside there. He agreed to do so but on two conditions.
He stated that a devotee will be considered to have completed their darshan only when they take a dip in the Triveni Sangam. He must be worshiped on the day of Naga Panchami during the Sawan month.
It is believed that the idol at the temple was established by none other than Mansaputras of Lord Brahma. Apart from Lord Nagvasuki, the temple also has deities of Lord Ganesh, Parvati Devi, Lord Shiva, and Bhishma Pitamah.
Architectural Marvels:
As you approach the Nagvasuki Temple grounds, you will be charmed by the beautiful edifice that combines traditional features with contemporary design. The temple’s façade has elaborate carvings, elegant pillars, and magnificent sculptures of snakes symbolizing their significance in Hindu mythology. 1. One has to follow the dress code while entering the place of worship.
2. Respect the customs and the co-pilgrims when you are on the temple grounds.
3. It is prohibited to smoke or chew betel leaves inside the temple.
4. The darshan timings are from 10:30 AM in the morning to 4:30 PM in the evening.
