We want to make technology accessible for those who value people, change and public welfare.

What is Tech for Social Good?

At its core, social good is about people. It’s a good or service that benefits anyone, ranging from an individual to an entire community, in the most impactful way possible. It’s impactful and scalable. By using technology, we can help make information more discoverable, empower an entire community, promote social welfare and much more.

Why Tech for Social Good?

As humans, we all have a desire to help others. When you build great, accessible technology, others are able to benefit from the work you put in and it feels great.

As creators and builders we have the responsibility to make leaps in society. Many large companies, like Google or Facebook, have been using the power of technology and innovation to grow, by building scalable solutions with ease. Some of these companies also have Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives put in place, which makes them think about how to make their software more accessible.

Now imagine if nonprofits, whose missions revolve around social good, had access to the talent and resources of these companies. They would be able to build solutions that could scale with the problems that they are trying to solve.

About Blueprint

We at Blueprint, believe that technology should be accessible to those who want to build a better world. We are a group of passionate and talented students looking to help advance NPOs by making engineering solutions easily available and working along-side the problem.

Method

Each project is assessed to ensure it will have impact and we are able to commit to it. We are meticulous about our code, design and implementation and are constantly working together to think about creative solutions to any of the problems we are approached with.

Culture

When we aren’t working together, we are building a stronger team together. Blueprint operates like a family with a mission, eating and volunteering together whenever we can. Blueprint values culture deeply, which allows us to work together more effectively and have lots of fun while we are doing it.

Projects

For Summer 2017, we have a team of 16 developers working on 3 projects spanning a variety of social good initiatives. Our team will be working hard this summer to build great solutions and present them to the community.

So what have we worked on?

At the Waterloo chapter, we have worked on the Somo Project, which is a nonprofit that provides local entrepreneurs living in Kenya with business resources and grants to simulate business in their communities. We worked on an SMS survey tool that allows the Somo Project to keep in touch with their entrepreneurs. The tool also allows entrepreneurs to survey their customers.

Food Shift is another project, which was taken on by the Blueprint chapter at Berkeley. Food Shift is an organization that is dedicated to reducing food waste, by working with businesses and communities to come up with food sustaining strategies. The team at Blueprint was able to build an online platform in which donors could make donations, while notifying recipients of the donation via email.
