A rebirth of myself

Vinson is an MC, singer, and songwriter who started making music at 17.

He grew up in Detroit with family members in Motown music groups, and since moving to Los Angeles he has been dropping fresh new tracks and hitting the live stage.

Vinson used to go by the name King — V, but back on January 21st at the notorious LA event, Bananas, he introduced the world to Vinson. On July 15th Vinson dropped his new song and video titled Beeches, so we hit his line to talk about creating independently and his upcoming EP.

Ain’t even gotta lynch us cuz the colony within us”

On the surface Beeches is simple and dreamy, but the performance from Vinson features introspection on his relationships and raw comments on social injustices. The ethereal boom-bap style beat was produced by Azoth, but Vinson sat on it for a few years.

After working a 14 hour shift, he was feeling aggravated and needed to let off some steam and the lyrics came together quickly. The tone resembles a man who aims to distribute necessary information as he calls out Kamala Harris, and addresses topics such as gerrymandering and universal basic income from a pro-black perspective.

The viewer is pulled into the world of Vinson and his friends having a picnic filled with color, creativity, and kush. Since it’s his first release in a while, he says this is “who I am, my ideal chill day.” The intro starts at a store where the group is getting all the needed food and drinks, then they post up in the neighborhood vibin’ while the sun sets and Vinson kicks game.

When you invest in yourself, you continue to reap the rewards more than other people.”

Vinson’s idea of being an independent artist is engaging with the music scene through the lens of controlling your creative and intellectual property. Not following trends or having someone to bankroll your work is definitely the tougher path.

His advice to other independent artists — “Just keep going and stay consistent. As much as you think that people don’t give you recognition, people are paying attention when you least expect it.

You can watch Vinson’s new video for Beeches on Youtube and make sure to follow him on Instagram for the announcement of his upcoming EP, U and Me at 3:03. We got to see some of the songs on this project at his last Bananas show, and it’s coming before the end of the year so stay tuned!
