Ramaj Eroc is a buzzing songwriter and producer, hailing from Chicago, who wants to bring honest positivity to the world. With almost 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify his tracks are quickly gaining their deserved attention, and he consistently rips Los Angeles stages with fun, high-energy performances. A month and a half into the new year Ramaj has already dropped a healthy amount of new music, and this Valentines Day he is dropping “Positivity”.

The song showcases a melodic hook, two introspective verses from Ramaj himself, and a melancholy beat from producer, HM Surf. The thick synths and subtle piano set the stage for Ramaj to reflect on his relationship and maneuvering through negativity on social platforms as his follower count begins to rise. We asked Ramaj how this song came to be, and he simply replied “just scrollin’ on my phone everyday”.

In the first verse, Ramaj provides insight into his time spent on social media — “this damn explore page got me scroll, scroll, scroll… I be like ‘Woah, Woah’ this algorithm knows me well, better than my friends, girl I can tell”. The algorithm on platforms like Instagram captures how the user interacts with accounts and pushes posts to the top of the user’s view if it’s identified as relevant content. The initial shock also brings Ramaj face-to-face with some of the more dark and negative posts, to which he cleverly juxtaposes this interaction to the light he finds within his relationship. It’s a precious moment of the song that highlights his vulnerability and endearment for the one he loves.

The second verse has Ramaj observing how his lover tends to interact with social media. “”I know it took a good 60 pics in your camera roll before you decided to upload”. We often look for affirmation in the wrong places, like from random strangers on the internet. For women specifically, social media can be challenging to navigate due to a large part of society only viewing them through a lense of sexuality, and feeling they must pander their content towards that archaic mindset. He offers closing words of wisdom by reminding his partner and the listener “if you ever seek validation just look in the mirror”. True validation comes from viewing ourselves in an honest and positive light.

Ramaj observes how negative can often be appealing, and even though we all complain about it, we also follow it. He isn’t saying we should live in a world devoid of negative posts; controlling the actions and behavior of others online is completely out of our control. However, he conveys that giving power to those people and subjects depletes the positivity we find in ourselves and in the people we love.
