Psalm 148

Let’s read through today’s psalm and reflect on the beauty of His works. Specifically, let us reflect on how His creation in Heaven and on Earth already magnifies His well-deserved glory.

1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights!
2 Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his hosts!

3 Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars!
4 Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens!

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord!
For he commanded and they were created.
6 And he established them forever and ever;
he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.

7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all deeps,
8 fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy wind fulfilling his word!

9 Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars!
10 Beasts and all livestock,
creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for his people,
praise for all his saints,
for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!

How magnificent is our God who forms the Heavens and the Earth! How great is the creator whose name alone is exalted! His reign is unmatched among the rulers of the Earth; Let all of creation praise His mighty name!

Watch as creation sings praises to Him, yet does not speak (Psalm 66:4). We, who have been graciously given the honour of using our breath to speak and to sing, must use this gift to join creation’s melody in ascribing all of our praise to the King of Kings. Lift up a prayer of praise right now, for He is worthy.

Read and listen (or even sing!) to this song, “Praise his Name” (Psalm 148) — Sovereign Grace Music. Consider how creation longs to sing and declare His praise to which we have been given the gift of communing with the almighty king. Consider the bridge of the song, which additionally mentions how much greater praise we have because of the gospel and his redeeming love. The song is one of my favourites, because it’s so simple, yet is such a necessary cry of worship.

King enthroned in majesty, all things made by His decree
Hear creation’s melody, “Praise Him! Praise Him!”
Everything with life and breath, everywhere from east to west
Every heart raised from the dead, praise Him, praise Him
Angels echo the refrain, “Jesus, Lamb for sinners slain!”
Name above all other names, praise Him, O Praise his Name!

Consider taking a walk today. Observe the beautiful colours of the fall and the intricacies that God puts into every single thing on the Earth. Praise His Name!
