Our Sheep’s Journey

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

Aren’t people a lot like sheep?

We live; we eat; we sleep — it’s not really that complicated. Sure, we got careers going on for us, marriage seems like a big deal, and we have a whole future to think about. But are we all that different?

  • I know it’s probably not a good idea to rummage through brambles … But wow! Do those berries look good!
  • His wool looks a lot better than mine, and I’m a bit jealous — but hey, at least I’m not like those black sheep.
  • I know those wolves are out there — hopefully, they don’t eat me.
  • The grass seems greener on that hill — I guess I’ll have to go and find out.

Probably less than we think.

Our lives are beyond our control.

We never fully know where we’re going or where we’ll end up — no matter how confident we are.

Sometimes, it all seems so complicated — but that might just be us.

If we really wanted to simplify things, I think it really just comes down to this: are we out here on our own, or do we have a good Shepherd? do I belong to Him?

If we do, I think everything will be okay.

Yeah.

I think things will be more than just okay.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Out into the fields I walk

Gazing up, down, left, and right

An awestruck observer of miracles

Delightfully blessed and content

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Under the valleys, I tread

Glazed over and cast down by dread

A bleeding and humbled heart

Disciplined, yet so dearly loved

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Over the hills, I march

Eyes fixed upon the prize

A bearer of the entrusted flame

Privileged with unimaginable grace

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

In His Paths of righteousness, I’m led

Focused entirely on the Shepherd ahead

Amazed by sheer weight of glory

Cherished, chosen, and held forever in His arms
