Welcome to UWM, Class of 2024 Panthers! As upperclassmen, we have all felt the terror and excitement of heading off to college for the first time. So, here is some advice to help you navigate and be successful on our campus!

“It’s okay to ask for help. Do not think that it is a sign of weakness.”

We are all here for you and to support you in anyway that we can.

There are a TON of free resources on campus that you can use to be academically successful, and stay mentally and physically healthy.

Here are some of the resources that are available for you:

Tutoring & Supplemental Instruction

UWM Writing Center

Accessibility Resource Center

Multicultural Student Centers

Student Success Center

Norris Health Center and University Counseling Services

University Recreation

You can find more student resources here!

“Get out of your comfort zone!”

College is all about discovering yourself and the best way to do that is to get out of your comfort zone. So, embrace the challenges and put yourself out there because you may find something new about yourself.

We suggest joining one of our 300+ student clubs or organizations on campus. Or use that FREE Milwaukee County U-Pass to explore Milwaukee. We promise you won’t regret it!

“Take every opportunity! It’s better to say ‘that wasn’t for me’ than ‘I wish I had.’”

We have incredible events on campus and in the city, so take advantage of them!

It is a great way to meet new people, make connections and have fun.

By taking opportunities that come along, you’re sure to learn more about yourself from the experience.

“Get a planner, read the syllabus, and write all important dates from the syllabus in your planner.”

A way to enjoy your college experience is to be academically organized. It isn’t fun pulling all-nighters because you forgot about an assignment or a test. So, read EVERY syllabus and plan AHEAD to give yourself plenty of time to study and work on homework.

You will need to learn what studying skills work best for you. However, we suggest finding a study spot outside of your residence hall room, schedule time everyday to work on school and keep a planner. Those are just a few ways to help you stay a head on your workload, but again, find out what works for you.

Always remember that if you find yourself struggling academically, reach out to your professors during office hours. They are here you help you succeed!

“Have fun!”

Lastly, college is supposed to be fun! It will pass by in a breeze, so embrace all opportunities, challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. You will learn something about yourself with every new experience and make amazing memories throughout the process.

We can’t wait to see you around campus, Class of 2024! In the meantime, have a fun and safe summer, and we hope to see you in the fall.

Sincerely,

Upperclassmen
