Luca Burgio

I’m Luca, an UI/UX and Visual Designer from Italy working passionately at Musixmatch and having fun on some side projects. I’ve loved design since I was young and I was lucky enough to turn my passion into my job.
When your friends or parents ask to you what job do you do, how do you answer?
It’s a bit complex to explain to my parents and friends what I’m doing. Usually I try to describe my job with simple and trivial words helping people understand at least a bit of what it is I do.
What is your background, how did you train?
Since I was young I loved great colors, clean images, well designed products and anything related to the design world. I started getting involved on UI/UX design when I studied at my Arts and Technologies’ school. After that I improved my skills by studying and getting new work experiences.
What the web can do to make this world a better place? How did the web improve your life( if it did)?
Technologies are constantly improving our life. In my opinion the web is a big part of these technologies and thanks to it, now we work and communicate easily and faster.
Can you show us three examples of interface that in your opinion improved human life?
I can tell you my first, Search Engines.
On quora.com, time ago there was a long discussion in answer to the question “what is the most intuitive interface ever created?”; according to Felipe Rocha it is the nipple, in your opinion instead? (http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-most-intuitive-interfaces-ever-created)
I think we could go forward to infinite talking about what is the most intuitive interface. In an easy way, the innovation of interfaces is getting better everyday and i don’t want to define a particular interface as “the most intuitive ever created”.
How is your work day type?
First of all, a good coffee. Check emails, check Facebook, Twitter, Dribbble and start opening Photoshop.

What is the most stimulating and challenging project you have accomplished?
Many projects have challenged me and helped me increasing my skills. Here is my Google’s featured redesign of Musixmatch App for Android, Glass and Wearables. Glad to have been part of the Wearables team. And some shots of a Messaging App project for iPhone I recently designed.

What is, among the existing digital services, the one you wanted to do?
Really good question. I think Carousel and Telegram or WhatsApp.
Many designers commit the mistake of starting a project directly from Photoshop, is there a perfect design method? What is your approach to the creative process?
I don’t think this should be called a “mistake”. Everyone uses different methods to design great products.
The “design” is an important part of our analogic life. What is the role of the designer in our digital life?
I think now design has a central role in our digital life and not only there. Look around you, design has a key role in every product you see now in our society.
Do you believe it is important for a designer to have a deep knowledge of matters as User Experience, Interaction Design, Product Design, and Front-end development?
If you can, share your experiences and skills. If you have some Front-end development skills that doesn’t mean that you’re not a great UI/UX or Visual designer. Every bit of new knowledge is appreciated.
In which way do you make a difference between User Interface and user experience?
I start designing the User Interface based on the User Experience research done before.

What is your relationship with the developers? There are people that have a relationship of continuous confrontation and other of deep friendship, where do you collocate with respect to this question?
I really love their power to convert my work to reality ☺ and I can always ask them a bit more about their procedures and some tips and tricks.
How do you think that your career and job will evolve in the next 5 years?
Well, I really don’t know. I have no idea what my future holds for me.
A famous quotation of David Carson (noted American graphic designer) says: “Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll does”.
I think “will save the world” is a bit excessive!
What do you think about Dribbble? Is it a good way to get a job? What’s the best way to find a job as designer?
Dribbble is one of the best place to find jobs and share your passion, works and ideas.
What book would you advice to a Junior Designer?
I really liked Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte.
Always as far as advices: what tools for the design? What tools for the projects management ?
I personally chatted with Murat Mutlu about his creation Marvel, a great prototyping tool. I can tell you these guys are working hard on it and they’re updating it so fast with incredible new features. For inspirations and updates I currently use Designer News, sidebar.io and Product Hunt.
