When I decided to switch careers I remember my friend telling me that I needed to enter the technology industry before I turned 30. I was in my mid-20s and didn’t think about his words too much, but today I am 31, which is why I remember his words.

My husband who decided to switch his career to become a programmer is 32. He’s worried that it’s too late for him to become a programmer.

Both of these factors have recently affected me. I decided to research the problem of ageism and see what people are talking about it.

“Most people simply assume that UX design is a “young person’s job”, which is completely false. The real problem is public perception.” — Laura Angelica in Mockitt

According to the 2019 design census, most UX designers are between 20 and 30 years of age.

But another study put me in shock. A 2018 AARP study concluded that 2 out of 3 U.S. workers over the age of 45 have seen or experienced ageism in the workplace. While ageism is prevalent across many industries, tech workers seem to get it the worst.
