This week is all about how to improve your product with testing. Why you should be doing this and a list of tools to help you get started. Testing and making improvements based on data WILL make a difference to your conversion rates, ROI and your bottom line. So start doing it today.

Here are the things I found interesting on the web this week.

Eid Mubarak

// THE ‘IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING, READ THIS’ THING

The Beginner’s Guide to Conversion Rate Optimization
So good I included it twice! You may have seen this in last week’s email. Read this free guide for ideas on how and why to test your product.

// THE ‘IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING, DO THIS’ THING

Google Analytics
Having Google Analytics implemented in your product is essential. Period. Hallas. No excuses. Your product will probably fail if you don’t. Enough said? Good.

When you have Google Analytics implemented correctly (did I mention it’s essential?), here are some other tools that can help you use data to make your product better…

// A/B TESTING THINGS

Optimizely — Let’s optimize digital experiences for your customers
This tool will get you started with A/B and multivariate testing. Want to increase the number of people who register on your website/mobile app? Want to improve your sales conversion rate? Test different approaches and see which works best. And they have a set of case studies to get you inspired.

VWO: Visual Website Optimizer
These guys call themselves the “World’s Easiest A/B Testing Tool” and I think they might be right. You don’t need to know any code to create variations of your website and track the outcome. They also have a really good guide to A/B testing.

// INSIGHT THINGS

CrazyEgg
This tool gives you heat maps, scroll maps and overlays that show you how your users interact with your app. This can reveal great insight into what things on your pages are being clicked on the most (or the least). You may be surprised by the results!

KissMetrics
Really useful visualizations of customer behaviour that can help you identify where your customer retention is weak and make improvements to increase your conversion rates and acquisition.

Clicky — Real Time Web Analytics
Free real-time web analytics. This is basic to look at but very detailed. You could spend hours getting lost in all this lovely data.

Clicktale Academy
Clicktale are a ‘Rolls Royce’ Solution that looks good for mature products but is probably too detailed for startups. However, they do have a set of case studies which will inspire you to do more product testing.

// OPTIMISATION THINGS

Unbounce
These guys have selected the best performing landing pages for you to use as templates for your own. No code required! If your landing page could be performing better, consider using one of these instead.

// REAL PEOPLE TESTING YOUR PRODUCT THINGS

User Testing
This is real people using YOUR website or mobile app and their experience is captured on video for you to watch and cringe at. Seriously, this is an exceptionally useful tool if you are struggling to find a focus group, or if you just want to show your product to a different set of people.

Verify
Verify lets you test screenshots to gain valuable insight on your design before writing a single line of code. Thinking about adding a new feature? Test it with real people first! Need to choose between 2 different homepage designs? Test them with real people first! You get the idea.
